Alumnus, Lungelo Hopa (Class of 2002), has joined the Lawhill team as Head of Maritime Studies. His responsibilities include teaching Maritime Economics, overseeing the teaching of Nautical Science (done by external, freelance instructors) and acting as the link with Simon’s Town School on all academic matters involving Lawhill Maritime Centre boarders.
Mr Hopa, who has worked as an entrepreneur in the maritime industry since 2013, completed his S1/S2 studies in Navigation at CPUT in 2003 before joining the SA Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) in 2004.
He describes himself as ‘an extrovert who takes pleasure in challenges and seeing results. As an intuitive and insightful person, I enjoy problem-solving and decision-making and take pride in what I do’.
He regards his strengths as having a sharp imagination, being goal-oriented and feeling comfortable in leadership roles.
Following Mr Hopa’s appointment and the retirement of the former Hostel Parent, Mrs Norma Karsten at the end of May 2025, Mr Saule has resumed his role as Head of Operations while Mr Baatjes has taken responsibility for Extra Murals (including the maritime sports portfolio). Mr Hopa and Mr Baatjes share the ‘Hostel Parent’ portfolio, ably assisted by Ms Naledi Mudzinge, an alumnus (Class of 2024).
Debbie Owen remains responsible for donor management and liaison, fundraising and marketing, amongst others.
