The 2026 Grade 11 WorkShadow activity is provisionally set to take place from 2 to 4 September, 2026 and we are inviting maritime companies in Cape Town to support this invaluable experience for our students.
Why should you host a student/a group of students? What’s in it for you?
- The ‘workplace immersion’ programme is an opportunity for students to spend a few days learning more about the career they are thinking of doing one day, and to see what it actually entails – not a romanticised version on Tik-Tok etc
- It’s also an opportunity to experience, in real life, the importance of ‘soft skills’ such as punctuality, communication etc, in the workplace.
- In return, host companies get the opportunity to share – first hand – details on employee expectations – what they look for when recruiting talent into their business etc. Sadly, many of the skills employers are looking for, are often NOT taught at school and much has been written about how unprepared Gen Z’s are for the workplace.
- This initiative is an opportunity for young, talented students to benefit from first-hand mentoring. Not all students have the luxury of parents who work, so we need our Lawhill ‘village’ to open their doors for a few days and help prepare them for post-school employment. Such is the importance of this project that it forms part of the student’s Term 3 mark for Maritime Economics.
