AN EDUCATIONAL HOLIDAY ADVENTURE FOR AKHONA ZONDO (GR12)

Grade 12 maritime student Akhona Zondo, a 2024 Sean Day Scholar and Head Girl of Simon’s Town School, was one of two very fortunate high school students invited to be the first to join the SEAmester VII ‘floating laboratory’ research expedition

The expedition – which took place in the June 2024 school holidays on the polar research vessel the SA Agulhas II – has previously only been available to post graduate students.

Akhona applied to be considered for the trip because she wanted to learn more about Marine Sciences.

Following her experience at sea, she said:

‘After spending 10 days at sea, I know this field of work as well as working onboard a vessel is for me, it’s where I fit in and belong.

‘The opportunity to be onboard South Africa’s famous research vessel not only propelled me towards my dream of studying marine biology abroad, but also inspired me to develop an awareness programme within my community.’

The almost two weeks onboard vessel off the South African coast, included lectures on oceanography, wind patterns, marine biochemistry, phytoplasma, seabirds, tracking systems, analysis, statistics, adaptations of creatures to the environment, water temperature and air analysis.

The lectures covered two streams of learning – oceans and tools. Akhona met professionals in the industry: lecturers from UCT, students studying Marine Sciences and members of the NSRI. Studies included observation of astronomy and underwater bioluminescent plankton in the Antarctic Islands. Deck work revealed the importance of networking with people, particularly in light of applying for bursaries and jobs.

‘The people on board were enthusiastic, friendly, supportive, helpful and kind. I was able to ask them many questions and they asked me questions about the biggest things I have learnt about life.

‘I deeply appreciate this opportunity. It allowed me to find my feet. I thank my mentors, the UCT Department of Oceanography, Dr Wheeler, Dr Kolber and the team at the Lawhill Maritime Centre for making this possible.
